Childbirth. It can rock the strongest woman to her core, and yet it is one of the most empowering experiences a woman can ever have. There is nothing that compares to the miracle of holding your child for the first time. There is nothing quite so bonding as going through birth with your husband by your side.
A woman never forgets the birth of her children, and yet the experience is so surreal that there are many details that fade with time. That is why I strongly encourage parents to hire a birth photographer to capture those precious moments forever: A husband stroking his wife’s back as she labors, the loving touch of a nurse or midwife, a mother’s face when she sees her baby for the first time. While many people may cringe at the thought of a camera in the delivery room, birth photographers are very tasteful in the shots that they capture, and typically stay up by the mother’s shoulder.
At my own birth, I had planned to have a friend photograph for me, but plans fell through when my labor went late into the night and she couldn’t find a sitter for her kids. In a desperate measure to preserve some memories for me, my midwife snapped some very unflattering pictures of me in all my naked glory. Needless to say I couldn’t have these pictures printed unless I wanted to shock the guy who develops photos at CVS. I toyed with the idea of deleting them, but decided instead to hide them deep into my computer. Even though they were terrible, they were all I had captured of that precious time in my life. After my son was born we snapped some fuzzy pictures of him on our phones and that was it.
If only I could go back, I would have definitely invested the time and money to find a professional birth photographer. These moments are fleeting and they deserve the care and discernment that a practiced photographer can give.
